Celebrate National Wear Your Pearls Day December 15th!
About pearls it has been said, “The pearl is the queen of gems and the gem of queens.” Timeless, stylish, and cultured, there are a host of reasons to fall in love with pearls. These gems of the sea may be paired with almost any outfit for a smooth and sophisticated look – and many brides choose pearls as an accessory on their big day for an elegant and polished impression. Formal cocktail or “casual but classy,” pearls work with just about every ensemble. As Jackie Kennedy put it, “Pearls are always appropriate.”
Strength Through Adversity
More than class and refinement, however, pearls also symbolize peace, serenity, and strength. Natural pearls are formed when oysters, mussels, or clams intake an irritant – often a piece of sand. This grain of sand, a piece of shell, or even a parasite can cause the oyster or mussel to react in defense. To protect itself from the irritant, the oyster or mussel coats the particle in a layer of aragonite and conchiolin. Over time, these layers build up and become what we know as a pearl. (Learn more here from Joslin’s about the symbolism and history of pearls.)
National Wear Your Pearls Day officially falls on December 15th each year. The holiday was first started by bestselling author and motivational speaker, DeAnna Bookert. Bookert asserts that, just like irritants create pearls, the difficulties we face in life only serve to make us more beautiful. Bookert opined that just as pearls form in many different sizes, shapes and even colors; each person’s beautiful life story is uniquely formed by their own difficulties and achievements. “I wear pearls as a reminder that I have purpose and value,” Bookert remarked.
